What is entity consistency?
Entity consistency means your firm’s name, address, and phone number (NAP) are byte-for-byte identical everywhere they appear — your website, your schema markup, your Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia, Martindale-Hubbell, state bar listings, and every other directory. Not “close.” Identical. Search engines and AI systems assemble your firm’s identity from all of these sources at once, and every mismatch fragments the signal.
Can a small mismatch really hurt rankings?
Yes — and the failure mode is invisible. A documented example from local-SEO research: a firm with otherwise strong signals was suppressed in the Local Map Pack because its Google Business Profile said “Suite 400” while its website schema said “Ste 400.” One abbreviated word, two apparently different businesses, split authority. The firm was not penalized; it was simply never assembled into one entity strong enough to rank.
Why does this matter more in 2026 than it used to?
Two shifts raised the stakes:
- Google moved from keyword matching toward a reputation engine. It
- AI answer engines cite entities, not pages. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or
increasingly asks whether the rest of the internet agrees your firm is one credible entity. Consistent NAP plus consistent attorney names are the spine of that agreement — and unstructured brand mentions now carry weight alongside traditional links.
Google’s AI Overviews recommend firms, they lean on the same entity graph. An inconsistent firm risks the worst outcome available: the AI describing you incorrectly, or crediting your results to a name that is almost yours.
How do you audit it?
The process is unglamorous and completely mechanical:
- Define the canonical string. One exact legal rendering of name, address,
- Crawl your own properties first: site footer, contact page, schema
- Sweep the directories: the legal-specific set (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw,
- Re-audit quarterly. Directories “helpfully” reformat data, old

markup, and Google Business Profile. These four must match before anything else matters.
Martindale, state bar) plus the general map/data providers, correcting every variant.
addresses resurface, and every office move restarts the clock.
What does it cost?
Effectively nothing — which is exactly why it is neglected. There is no ad budget to approve and no content to write; it is discipline, a spreadsheet, and a quarterly calendar entry. In a ranking system where most factors cost money or take years, a free fix your competitors skip is not a detail. It is an edge.
The five-minute self-check
Open your website footer, your contact page, and your Google Business Profile side by side. If the three renderings of your name, address, and phone are not character-for-character identical, you have found real ranking leakage in the time it took to read this article — and your directories are almost certainly worse.
Entity audits are part of every Optima local program, enforced quarterly. See if your market is open.
