What is non-brand organic traffic?
Non-brand organic traffic is every visit that arrives from a search that did not include your firm’s name. Someone typing “car accident lawyer near me” is non-brand; someone typing “Smith & Smith injury attorneys” is brand. The distinction matters because only one of them represents demand you earned rather than demand you already had. Non-brand organic is the honest measure of whether your marketing is finding people who do not yet know you exist.
Why is brand traffic a vanity metric?
Because brand searches count people who were already going to find you. When a prospect sees your billboard, hears a radio spot, or gets a referral and then Googles your name to confirm you are real, that visit lands in your analytics as organic traffic — but your website did nothing to create it. An agency that reports total organic growth without splitting out brand is taking credit for your reputation, your referrals, and your offline advertising. Strip the brand searches out and you see what the marketing program actually built.
How much of a typical firm’s traffic is just brand?
More than most owners expect — and the ratio is the tell. On a firm coasting on reputation, the large majority of organic clicks are brand searches, which means the site is a confirmation tool, not an acquisition channel. A healthy program inverts that: across our portfolio, roughly seventy percent of organic clicks on mature client sites come from non-branded searches — tens of thousands of distinct “earned demand” queries per firm. That is the difference between a website that closes the cases your name already generated and one that generates cases your name never could.
Why does non-brand organic compound when ads do not?
Because you buy an ad once and rent the ranking forever, but you earn an organic position once and it keeps working. A Local Service Ad or PPC click costs the same on day one and day one thousand, and auction prices only rise. A non-brand organic ranking, by contrast, is an asset: the content that earns it keeps ranking, keeps drawing qualified searchers, and keeps lowering your blended cost per signed case every month it holds. This is why organic looks expensive in month three and looks like a bargain by month eighteen — the spend is front-loaded and the return compounds.
What does disciplined non-brand growth actually look like?
It looks like a deliberate content program, not a traffic spike. The levers are unglamorous and they stack:
- Practice-area pillar pages that answer the questions a searcher asks
- Named-author E-E-A-T content, published under the attorneys who actually
- Jurisdiction-specific depth — the local statutes, courts, and case types
- Internal linking and entity discipline so the authority each page earns
before they know they need a lawyer — statutes of limitation, what a case is worth, what to do after a specific type of injury.
try the cases, because Google’s quality standards for legal content are the strictest it has and reward genuine expertise.
that generic national content cannot match and that map directly to the searches in your market.
flows to the pages that sign cases.
Run as one system, that program is how a firm builds earned demand it owns outright. Across our engagements, that discipline has driven non-brand organic traffic up more than 400% year-over-year and produced seven-figure equivalent traffic value — reach a firm would otherwise have to rent from the ad auction every single month.
How should you report it?
Split brand from non-brand and report only the second number. Ask your agency for organic sessions and conversions segmented by branded versus non-branded queries — Google Search Console exposes exactly this — and then ask what the non-brand share signs in actual cases. If they cannot separate the two, they are almost certainly reporting your reputation back to you as if they built it. A firm’s marketing deserves the same scrutiny as any other investment, and this is the line item that shows whether the investment is working.
The one-minute self-check
Open Google Search Console, filter your queries to those that do not contain your firm’s name, and look at the click total. That number, and its trend over the last twelve months, is the closest thing to a truth serum your marketing has. If it is flat while your total traffic climbs, you are not growing — your name is just getting more famous, and something else is paying for that.
Optima builds non-brand organic as an owned asset, reported honestly against signed cases. See if your market is open.
